The county was named for Kent County, England, and is one of 3 counties in Delaware. As of 2000 the population was 126,697. The estimated population in 2004 was 138,752. This was an increase of 9.51% from the 2000 census. In 2002, the per capita personal income in Kent County was $24,987. This was an increase of 20.0% from 1997. The 2002 figure was 81% of the national per capita income, which was $30,906. The county seat is Dover; the state capital and the largest city in the county. Total area for Kent County is 800 square miles, with 590 square miles being land and 210 square miles being water. Interestingly, Kent County is the smalles county in the state of Deleware by population. Sussex CountyThe first European settlement in the state of Delaware was founded in 1631 near the present-day town of Lewes. Sussex county, which was named for Sussex County, England, wasn’t organized until 1683 and is one of 3 counties in Delaware. Located in the southern part of Deleware, Sussex county is in the Seaford metro area. The estimated population in 2004 was 172,216. This was an increase of 9.95% from the 2000 census. In 2005, the population of the county was estimated to be 176,548, an increase of 12.7%. In 2002, the per capita personal income in Sussex County was $25,471. This was an increase of 19.3% from 1997. The 2002 figure was 82% of the national per capita income, which was $30,906. The largest partial city in Sussex County is Milford, which shares it’s area with Kent County. Seaford is the largest city with all of it’s area inside Sussex County. Total area for Sussex County is 1,196 square miles, with 938 square miles being land and 258 square miles being water. The County seat is Georgetown. Interestingly, of the nation’s counties, Sussex County ranks number one in production of poultry. Sussex County, Delaware is home to several festivals, fairs, and events. Some of the more notable festivals are the Riverfest held in Seaford, the World Championship Punkin Chunkin held at various locations throughout the county since 1986, the Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival, the Bethany Beach Jazz Funeral to mark the end of summer, the Apple Scrapple Festival held in Bridgeville, the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival, the Sea Witch Halloween Festival and Parade in Rehoboth Beach, the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival the Nanticoke Indian Pow Wow in Oak Orchard, and the Return Day Parade held after every election in Georgetown.
